Know Your Neighborhood: San Marcos Restaurant

How can we bring people together?

This was the question that we were trying to answer a couple months ago with Emerson and Khristy from the Highland Park Neighborhood Association.

The answer we all agreed on? FOOD! Great food. Food that is accessible. Not just because (but partially because) we all love to eat, but because of the opportunities that food gives us. Our community needs the ability to share a meal with other people and this gives a better, and tastier, understanding of another culture.

Because who doesn't love tacos?

Because who doesn't love tacos?

So together we started planning a night out with the neighbors to have dinner at a local restaurant named San Marcos, which has been in business for more than 7 years, and is accessible by crossing Main St. from Highland Park, on S. Orchard Knob Ave.

We went to talk with the owners, Elida and Augusto, to explain the idea to them: gathering people around food for a new, and accessible, cultural experience.

The result was a fun and flavorful dinner at San Marcos, and the owners even gave us special prices and a special menu. We were expecting around 15 people, but the place was filled with over 30 people, double what we had hoped for.

We arrived hungry and excited for our meal, and we were greeted by Elida and Augusto, who also live in Highland Park. At the end of the night we left the place happy, full, and with coupons in our hands for round number two.

We are planning more nights out, with good food in local restaurants. If you have any ideas, please contact us using the information below!
