Getting to know your neighbors can be a bit intimidating, especially if you are new to your neighborhood.
Whether you’ve lived in your home for two months or twenty years, it’s never too late to reach out and connect, and the holidays are a perfect time, especially if you need to borrow a ladder to hang lights or sugar for cookies.
Here are some simple ways you can get to know your neighbors and spread a bit of cheer this holiday season (or any time of year)!
1. Make an Extra Batch of Treats
Everyone loves a loaf of fresh bread or a batch of cookies. If you’re already making holiday treats for your family, pop in an extra batch to share with your neighbors. It will give you a great opportunity to introduce yourself. You can also leave some for your mail carrier or garbage collectors as a thank you.
2. Shovel Some Sidewalks
While Chattanooga rarely sees snow, ice can form easily once the temperature drops. If you have elderly neighbors or just feel like helping out, clearing a neighbor’s sidewalk or laying salt is a simple way to help out. If your city doesn’t experience icy conditions, mowing a lawn or helping out with household chores.
3. Go Caroling
Travel up and down your street or visit a nursing home facility and sing some of your favorite carols. It can really help you familiarize yourself with your fellow neighbors, and is a great introduction opportunity.
4. Organize a Neighborhood Holiday Party
A party is a great way to meet all of your neighbors and have casual, getting-to-know-you conversation, and it doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple potluck or some finger foods and hot chocolate will give you the opportunity to both meet and treat your neighbors.
