September 12, 2017 marked the 23-year anniversary of AmeriCorps’s founding.
In 1994, under President Bill Clinton, AmeriCorps was started as an initiative by the Corporation for National and Community Service to help meet the needs of communities across the country. Two already existing programs were combined in order to produce AmeriCorps: VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).
Unlike AmeriCorps as a whole, the VISTA program was actually started in 1965 to serve as a domestic Peace Corps. VISTA members are assigned as full-time assistance to non-profit and community organizations across the country in exchange for certain benefits which can include career experience, student loan deferment, etc.
CNE is proud to be an organization that is assisted through AmeriCorps VISTA each year. Without our VISTA volunteers, our events and outreach would certainly not be the successes that they are. That said, we are excited to welcome our newest VISTA, Jordan Allen, to our team this year!
Over the past 23 years, AmeriCorps has grown to include over 80,000 active members participating in service each year, and the amount of communities and organizations that have benefited from their help is immeasurable. Help us celebrate by thanking AmeriCorps and its dedication to service!
We're grateful to NeighborWorks America for providing us with the opportunity to participate in the AmeriCorps program.
